The 16th century fort of Khimsar is perched on the edge of the Thar Desert. Another architectural marvel of Rajasthan it is one of the finest forts. It unfolds a glorious past through its battle scared walls and turrets. Rao Karamsiji - the 8th son of Rao Jodhaji, the founder of Jodhpur, is said to have founded the royal dynasty at Khimsar. The fort was constructed by him in the 16th century AD. Khimsar is said to have been one of the main chieftains of Marwar and also the head house of Karamsot Rathors. The fort boasts of a long lineage of valiant rulers who fought fierce battles but lived with their grace and dignity intact. It has a beautiful place within which is a perfect example of the grandeur. The historic city houses several mosques, one of which was established by Emperor Akbar.
